Sacred Harp singing (also called shape note or fasola singing) is a nondenominational community musical activity emphasizing participation, not performance. We sing from The Sacred Harp, an oblong songbook first published in 1844. The book includes four-part, a cappella psalm tunes, fuging tunes, odes and anthems written by early American composers (1770 - 1810), and settings of folk songs and revival hymns (circa 1810 - 1860). Current editions of The Sacred Harp also contain songs in these styles written by living composers.
